Applications for permanent residency in South Africa are considered in terms of Section 26 (Direct Residency Permits) and Section 27 (Residency-on-Other-Grounds Permits) of the Immigration Act 2002 (Act No 13 of 2002), and read with Regulation 33 of the Immigration Regulations.

Short Stay Visitors Visa


A short stay visitors visa is required for non-visa exempt foreign nationals who wish to visit South Africa for tourism purposes for a period not exceeding 90 days. This period can be extended in South Africa for a further 90 days. Certain persons are visa exempt when coming to South Africa for a period of 90 days or less by way of their nationality. A short term visitors visa is generally granted for 90 days. Provided that there are no restrictions to the visa , this period can be extended in South Africa for a further 90 days. Those wishing to extend this period must do so 60 days prior to the expiry of their visas. i.e. within the first 30 days of their visa being granted.

NB: Please take note that all applications for short stay visitor’s visas must be made prior to coming to South Africa.
