A retired person visa enables a foreign national to retire and reside in South Africa. This can be on a seasonal or continuous basis and persons of all ages may qualify for this visa.
Whether you qualify for this visa type is largely dependent on whether you have access to the necessary amount of funds required to sustain your lifestyle. In order to satisfy this requirement you will need to prove that you have access to either a pension, an irrevocable annuity or retirement account which affords you an income of at least R 37 000.00 per month. Alternatively, your cash or combination of assets must generate the equivalent amount (R37 000.00) per month. Please take note that this amount must be available to each applicant.
Persons qualifying for this visa will also qualify for permanent residency, however, it is advisable to secure a retired persons visa before making application for permanent residency in light of the long processing time.
Individuals issued with permanent residency on this basis are eligible to conduct “retirement type work activity”. The Department of Home Affairs may authorise you to conduct work under certain terms and conditions they deem suitable.
